XENOPHOBIA IN SA: THE WORLD IS WATCHING

PRETORIA – Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe, has warned of possible reprisal attacks against South African businesses on the continent, in the wake of continuing violent xenophobia directed at foreigners on home soil.

The minister was speaking at a post-Cabinet briefing in Pretoria on Friday, where government reiterated it's condemnation of the recent wave of violence, which has claimed at least six lives.

Radebe says the xenophobic violence has not gone unnoticed around the world.

“The impact of these attacks has far reaching implications on our economic, social and relations with the continent, and the world.”

He says it’s likely to harm the economy.

“South African companies running successful businesses on the continent, who have to contribute to our revenue and sustain our economy, may suffer the same fate.”

Radebe has called on South Africans to stand united against xenophobia.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has hastened to remind South Africans of the great sacrifices the country's neighbours made during its struggle against apartheid and for democracy.

Radebe says democracy would not have been achieved without a collective global effort.

“The struggle against the system of apartheid would not have been won if it had not been for the respect and the support we had.”

He says it was not only South Africans who paid a price in this fight.

“Fellow African countries did not only host our people, they also contributed resources and some paid the ultimate price and lost their own citizens.”

Radebe says South Africans must respect their fellow African neighbours.
